As the semester wraps up, we wanted to say thank you to all of our incredible #NoSinglePath participants. Out of 40 stories, we reached 27 different departments at BC!
Coming into college, I thought I wanted to be pre-med solely based on the fact that I loved Grey’s Anatomy. I quickly realized that pre-med wasn’t for me and proceeded to switch my major on a weekly basis. Finally, I found International Studies and added a Global Public Health minor and a Marketing minor as I continued to learn more. I never could have imagined how much I would learn and change over the course of 3 years. Through my courses, conversations, professors, and peers, I have learned about careers I never knew existed. There really is so much to explore here at Boston College.
Now, as the Marketing Assistant for the Career Center, I have learned that my case wasn’t unique. The #NoSinglePath campaign has demonstrated the nonlinear nature of career journeys and the endless amount of ways to combine interests. It is easy to get wrapped up in what pursuing a traditional career looks like. In reality, there is no such thing. The most successful people have seen it all, failed a numerous amount of times, and are constantly looking for ways to grow. It has been a privilege to read students’ stories and learn about the different ways they experienced Boston College.
It was incredible to see how these stories are not only nonlinear, but ongoing. As one of our participants, William Liu, said so beautifully “I’m still very much exploring my career path–even as a senior. The process doesn’t end during your senior year, nor does it end after graduation. That’s when it really begins!”
We encourage all students to use their four years at Boston College to try new things, embrace failure, and discover what the world needs you to be. If there is one thing we have learned throughout this pandemic; life is unpredictable. Embrace the journey and reflect on what it is that makes you happy; change your mind, learn from mistakes, and never stop exploring. When you reflect on your time at Boston College, what do you want to remember?
Every experience is important and you never know how a simple story can inspire the people around you. So, thank you, to all of our #NoSinglePath participants for shedding light on your originality. As always, we are here to support and guide you through your career exploration.
Here are a few highlights from the campaign:
“Throughout the whole thing I tried to reflect and see what truly made me happy. I also know that my interests are very fluid and may change throughout the next few years!”–Charlotte Moore, LSOEHD ‘23, Applied Psychology
“I reached the conclusion that I had the rest of my life to work but only two more years at BC. I then knew that I wanted to spend the summer leaning into my college experience as much as possible and giving back to the school that’s done so much for me.”–Domenica Proud, CSOM ‘22, Accounting and Philosophy
“My journey throughout Boston College has been rough and bumpy, and the path I took to find my career goal was not so easy. Through this process I changed majors a couple of times, starting off from biochemistry and ending with Biology, had a difficult start to my course, and became lost at certain points of my college life. I wanted to find something that was interesting to me and that was not something I forced myself to do.”–Othman Khoshafa, MCAS ‘21, Biology
–Emily Mahland, MCAS ’22
