How to Land a Summer Internship in Healthcare & Nursing

As our Summer Experience Dashboard shows us, the vast majority of students land their summer experiences — whether internships, research, or volunteering — between January and May. On October 19, 5 BC students shared their own stories with their peers on how they found their summer experiences and their advice based on what they learned from these experiences. Here are a few takeaways from that panel:

“Lean into the fact that we’re students”

~ Stephanie Chamberlain (‘23, Biology major, Studio Art minor).

As students, you are in a position to soak up all the learning and opportunities that you can. Be open-minded and curious about what that might mean or what form that might take, and talk to BC alumni and others to learn about the field.

“Show passion for what you are doing and learning, and you will get so much more out of the experience”

~ Joe Milosh (‘23, Economic major, Biology minor, pre-med).

Remember that you don’t have to know everything, but enthusiasm for your work will help your employer know that you are eager to learn all that you can and, as a result, will likely open up opportunities for you.

“Everything in healthcare connects. So whatever you do over the summer, it’ll connect!”

~Alejandra Leon (‘22, Nursing, minor in Applied Psychology).

In other words, if you want to explore the world of healthcare, there are many ways to do that. Be open-minded to the exact type of summer role you take on and how it connects to other aspects of healthcare.

And take advantage of the many resources available to you!

For example, Izzy Jones (‘23 International Studies major, Global Public Health minor) recommends BC’s advanced study grants program while Courtney Davenport (‘23, Neuroscience major) mentioned that taking the 1-credit Designing Your Career course helped clarify her goals and interests.

The students also emphasized the resources available through the Career Center such as:

You’ve got this! There are many ways to have a productive summer learning experience, and we are here to help you identify and land yours.
