What is Business Casual Dress?

Many events throughout your career journey will require business casual dress, including career fairs, networking events, internships, and more. But what exactly does business casual mean? We’re here to help you demystify this term to help you make a strong first impression.

The primary difference between business formal and business casual is that business formal requires a suit, while business casual does not. Business casual allows you more freedom in your choices. Follow the guidelines below to assemble an appropriate outfit.

Tops:

  • Collared shirts (neutral colored or gentle patterns)
  • Blouses or nice sweaters with a modest cut (neutral colored or gentle patterns)
  • Quarter zip or sweater over collared shirt is appropriate if it is cold
  • Cardigan or blazer over blouse or collard shirt

Bottoms:

  • Slacks or khakis
  • Dresses or skirts that end at above the knee or longer

Shoes:

  • Closed-toe, fairly low-heel or dress shoes
  • Shoes should match the color of your belt
  • Shoes should be polished and comfortable

Accessories:

  • Ties are optional
  • Belts should be worn with slacks and match the color of your shoes
  • Jewelry and hair accessories should be kept to a minimum
  • Tights and pantyhose should match your skin tone
  • Cologne, perfume, and aftershave can be worn but should be used sparingly

Hair and makeup:

  • Hair should be neatly trimmed and well groomed, including facial hair
  • Makeup and nails should be neat, neutral, and understated

What to avoid: Denim, ripped pants, loud/bright colors and patterns, spaghetti straps, leggings, off-the-shoulder tops, sweatshirts, athletic shoes or gear.
