How many applications do you need to submit to land an internship/job?

We wish we could tell you that it takes exactly 45.63 applications to get a job or internship, but the actual answer is… there is no exact number. Rather than focusing on the amount, let’s focus on strategies to utilize to switch your mindset from quantity of applications to quality of applications. Read these 5 tips to better understand what we mean by quality applications:

1. Reflect:

What are your goals going into this search process?: This could include thinking about what you want to gain from this opportunity such as skills, building your network, exposure to a specific industry, company, etc. Additionally, what are your nonnegotiables going into the search-location, remote work options, etc.? Making a list of your wants and needs will be helpful when deciding which positions/companies you want to spend intentional time on for applications.

2. Research:

Once you list out your criteria, start to do consistent research on the industry, such as looking on Handshake for upcoming events, setting up networking conversations, or reading through company websites. This will help you in curating a target list of companies to apply to.

3. Prepare:

You have now reflected on your values, researched companies of interest, and saved a list of opportunities you are excited about. Now is the time to apply! This is where quality comes into play with your application materials. Go back to the research you compiled about the industry alongside your reflection and dive into writing your resume and cover letter.

  • Resume: When it comes to the resume tailor your bullet points by utilizing keywords. This can be done by going back to the posting and directly utilizing phrases and words they used to describe qualified candidates in your bullet points. Additionally, emphasize the skills that you learned were important through your research that you have by representing results you achieved in your bullet points.
  • Cover Letter: Yes, you should write a cover letter. This will include incorporating your “why” for applying to this position which again is based on your research and how this company/opportunity aligns with your career goals, values, interest, etc. Then focus time on your body paragraphs to share specific stories that exemplify your qualifications and how you will be a value add to the company.

4. Review:

Once you have written your application materials, have them reviewed by others. This can be done by attending drop-in hours at the Career Center and having our staff review your materials and offer recommendations to strengthen your application materials.

5. Apply:

Once you have done these steps it is time to apply! Make sure to submit your application materials by the deadlines. Check out an example of a tracking sheet here to help you stay organized-feel free to copy and adapt!

The extra time you take in reflecting on your values, experiences, and goals as well as the intentional research you completed for your application will be a strength well beyond your application materials!

Remember, it isn’t the amount of applications you are producing, but the quality of your application that employers will notice. Please come to the Career Center for a coaching appointment or drop-in to work with our staff to create the best quality applications possible.
